Jericho was a city that nestled in the Jordan River Valley. The region was relatively dry and arid, but Jericho’s proximity to water sources allowed it to sustain itself. Several springs provided fresh water for drinking and irrigation, while palm trees and other vegetation could be cultivated for food.

The population of Jericho was made up of Canaanites who spoke a Semitic language similar to Hebrew. Deuteronomy 34:3 describes it as “the city of palms” due to its abundance of palm trees.

While not a large city by modern standards, Jericho played an important role in the ancient world because it guarded one of the main routes from east to west through the Jordan River Valley.

One significant event that marked the beginning of their conquest of Canaan was when Joshua led his army across the Jordan River into Canaan. Before they attacked Jericho, an angel appeared before Joshua with instructions on how to conquer the city (Joshua 5:13-14).

The Israelite army then marched around Jericho once each day for six days with seven priests carrying trumpets made from rams’ horns until finally on seventh day they were instructed by God through Joshua’s leadership -to march around seven times before shouting so loud that walls fell flat allowing them entry into victory over this fortified location (Joshua 6:1).

Different scholars have different opinions about how these walls fell flat; some believe there may have been an earthquake involved or perhaps supernatural intervention by God Himself while others suggest something else entirely but regardless what is certain is this miraculous event demonstrated God’s power and His faithfulness towards keeping promises He has made unto His people which taught them valuable lessons about obedience & trust even amidst difficult circumstances!
